Pre-operative instructions for a hair transplant surgery

The surgery

In order to prepare your surgery in the best possible manner, please observe the following instructions.

• On the day of your capillary surgery, please take a shower or bath and wash your hair with a normal shampoo. Please try to avoid using any type of hair spray or other lotions.
• It is very important to have a good breakfast the morning of your surgery.
  
• If you are a smoker, it is recommended to avoid smoking 24 hour prior to surgery.
• Please do not drink any type of alcohol during the 3 days preceding your surgery.

 

Medication

Treatment

You will have to take the following medication:

• Minoxidil 5 % (+/- 2 weeks before surgery): apply this lotion on your donor area, twice a day.
• Prednisolone: 6 times a day, 1 tablet of 5mg (= 30 mg): this treatment is designed to prevent forehead edema.
  Normally you do not need to take this medicine if the surgery only affects the vertex.
  
• Augmentin 500mg (or any other amoxicillin-based drugs) 3 tablets a day: this antibiotic will prevent any kind of infection.

During consultation, you will have indicated that you are not allergic to any of these medicines. If this is the case, please contact our doctors imperatively.

Planning your hair transplant procedure with our center is easy, and if you are coming from out-of-town, there are a number of great places to stay.

Start taking Prednisolone and Augmentin one day before surgery. You will have to continue taking these medications up to 3 days after the operation (total: 5 days).

Blood analysis

A blood analysis is requested (Hepatitis B, C and HIV).
Ideally we should have received the results of this blood test at least 2 days prior to the day of surgery.

If you have a copy of the results, you can send it to us by e-mail and provide us with a copy of the results on the day of surgery.

Massage of the donor area

It is very important to massage the donor area at least 1 week before surgery in order to soften the skin in this area, which will facilitate the removal of the strip and will reduce any tension that you may feel at the level of the scar after your surgery.
This massage will help you to increase the skin's elasticity.

If possible you should start massaging your scalp 2 – 4 weeks prior to surgery, for approximately 10 minutes or better yet 30 minutes per day.
Moreover, it is recommended to leave your hair long on the back of your head so that it will cover the sutures after surgery.

The day of your surgery, please try to avoid wearing clothes which require pulling them over your head.
We recommend wearing a shirt.

In order to facilitate placement, we recommend that you also massage the receiving zone.

On the day of surgery you will also receive all the post-op instructions.
In fact the first hours are crucial. You should not touch the grafts at all. You will be asked to hydrate the receiving zone with a spray that you will receive at the clinic. You will be required to visit the clinic next day for a consultation.

Generally speaking for patients from abroad, there are no issues with travelling the day after surgery.

Patients who wish a post-operative follow-up can submit to daily consultations.

Last request

If you take multi-vitamins, vitamins B or E, please stop one week before your surgery. Such vitamins could enhance the bleeding..

Don’t take aspirin or anti inflammatory and no herbals medication one week before the surgery.

If you use anti depressor, anticoagulant or beta blocker, please inform our doctors.
